Setting:

JJ's Thai & Grill has been revamped and renamed. Black wood panelling and mirrors, a beautifully decorated main dining room and comfortable booth seating ensure its continued popularity.

8

Food:

There are two distinct cuisines — Thai and a Western-style grill. Thai items include delicious, tender chicken in yellow curry with coconut and spicy tom yam goong with large fresh prawns. Upmarket items include exquisitely presented whole sea bass cooked in different styles, including steamed with chilli and lime, or whole lobster in Panaeng curry. Grills are primarily USDA beef, Meyer Natural Red Angus, and beautifully marbled Australian Wagyu Grade 9. An 800-gramme succulent Boston lobster is a good choice. The chocolate chilli tart with mango sherbet is a successful combination, while coconut crème brûlée is superb on the eye and in the mouth.

8

Wine:

At night Thai & Grill transforms into a nightclub, so an extensive range of spirits and cocktails is listed. While champagnes feature prominently, the range of white and red wines from major regions, some by the glass, is well selected and most will match the cuisines.

8

Service:

Waiters are smartly attired. Having to handle both types of cuisine plus wine is asking a lot and knowledge could be improved just a little. That said, every effort is made to be polite and friendly, while overall service is very efficient.

Price:

Sharing five Thai dishes and a dessert costs about $860 per couple without drinks. Choosing a three-course meal with a top USDA steak or a grilled lobster comes to about $800.

Signature dishes:

  • Pomelo salad with fresh shrimp
  • Whole lobster in Panaeng curry
  • Grilled Meyer Natural Red Angus beef rib eye
