The fusion theme of “modern” and “China” is interpreted well in the décor of wooden antique-chic table furnishings in a huge dining hall. A giant reed boat frame hangs from the ceiling.
A diverse menu of traditional Chinese favourites, nibbler delicacies and seasonal dishes — at very reasonable prices — means it’s best to bring a group to share a fun, casual meal at Modern China. The shredded chicken with vermicelli and peanut sauce is a perfect light starter, while the Shanghai dumplings, listed on the menu as “mouthfuls of small steamed meat buns”, are soft and amazingly juicy. The sweet and sour boneless king fish offers crispy-sweet bites, while the shredded beef served with sesame pastry pockets is a playful delight. The dried fried string beans cooked with pork mince is a delicious stir-fry, matched well with the baked fresh beancurd. A must-try dish is the handmade Lanzhou-style dan-dan noodles, served in a rich spicy soup. Top off the taste adventure by sharing a selection of traditional Chinese desserts, including red bean paste pancake and peanut dumplings in a zesty ginger tea.
The wine list is very limited, offering only a single red and white choice from China or Chile. The Chilean chardonnay, however, is actually very agreeable, in both body and price.
The service is fast and efficient. Dishes come out speedily, yet still at a good level of quality.
Value for money. Best for group meals, so it’s easy to share a lot of dishes.
