Whet your appetite with a truly unique appetiser which comes in an eggshell com-plete with egg yolk paste, goose liver that has been seared on the hot plate and topped with caviar. Most items are served as small portions, so you can try an array of dishes accompanied by sips of the ever-popular Japanese sake. To savour this Japanese treat, move on to the sweet shrimp with avocado. Served in a mango sauce, it pulls all the flavours together in a bite to die for. Try the chef’s sashimi platter for a nice sampling of soft, tender salmon, sea urchin, tuna fillet, yellowtail and ark shell, and sweet shrimp, which is perfectly prepared and absolutely delectable. But it is the Japanese Kobe beef, grilled with powerful garlic and spring onions, that steals the show. Bite your way through this deep rich aromatic meat, which falls off the bone with spectacular succulence. To end the meal, try the citrus sorbet, a tangy lemon-lime Japanese import.
There is a huge selection of premium sake, while a couple of red wines and mocktails are also included in the drinks menu.
Aku carries through with good service. The waiters are friendly and polite and have an extensive knowledge of how to savour the delights of Japanese cuisine.
An enjoyable 3-course meal, with sushi and teppanyaki courses for two, without wine, comes to $1,200.
