This busy yet cosy restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Korean style, with wooden furnishings, large tables and private rooms. The focus is on group dining, which is the best way to enjoy a good barbecue and Korean feast.
As the first Korean restaurant to open in Hong Kong in 1964, Arirang has mastered the knack of fast service, good staple dishes and smokeless barbecues. The bahn chahn side dishes, ranging from preserved tofu to kimchi, bean sprouts and dried whitebait, are a delightful way to start. The beef combination plate and marinated short ribs are tasty choices for the grill, while the chilled beef tartare, mixed with raw egg and pear shavings, provides a fresh contrast. The buckwheat and seafood pancake works well, while the bibimbap stone pot with rice, vegetables, beef and egg is an intriguing mix of crispy texture and hearty flavour. Finish with the spicy rice cake with fish roll and vegetables, a perennial Korean favourite.
The imported wine list is small and subject to different monthly promotions. The traditional Korean wine list is good and offers picks such as chrysanthemum, hawthorn, herbal, plum, refined rice and wild raspberry varieties.
The service is friendly, attentive and helpful.
At about $250 per person, excluding wine, Arirang is very affordable – especially for group dining.
